Throughout the year Atalaya Golf & Country Club prides itself in providing its members with a very active competition calendar both at home and at other golf clubs. The opportunity to participate in a vast array of tournaments is offered to all members, whether low or higher handicappers.

Although many of Atalaya’s members spend their summers in their homelands, the challenge of robust competition remains strong for those members who summer on the Costa del Sol, and the Summer Mixed Interclub series of one-day tournaments promotes healthy competition amongst Atalaya’s socios and the members of neighbouring clubs.

The six clubs participating in this year’s travelling, six-match tournament are: Atalaya, Chaparral, El Paraíso, La Cala, Marbella Club and Santa Maria. Each club will host an 18-hole competition followed by a luncheon, lots of interesting golf talk and a prize giving ceremony.

Hosting this year’s first Summer Mixed Interclub match was La Cala Golf Resort. The event took place on Friday, the 14th of June on La Cala’s Course America.

The tournament’s format is Individual Stableford, with the better score of each pair recorded on each hole, more formally called “Fourball Stableford”. At every match each club is represented by six mixed teams, and the scores of each club’s top four scoring pairs are added together to calculate each team’s “score-of-the-day”.

Top scorers for Atalaya at La Cala were Nina and Richard Phillimore with 42 points and Jeanette Baldemark and Andoni Basterrechea with 36 points.

Atalaya ended the day in Third Place with 144 points, only one point behind Santa Maria. Club totals were close for all clubs except Chaparral. In spite of extremely challenging conditions created by high winds with gusts topping 40 kilometres, the Chaparral troupe ended the day with an unbelievable 166 points, more than twenty points ahead of all of the other five teams.

The second match of the the series is scheduled for the 28th of June at Santa Maria, and Atalaya is poised to climb higher on the ladder towards being crowned the 2019 Summer Mixed Interclub champion.
