The Senior Golf Tour Europe is proving itself a serious and challenging venue for amateurs and professionals alike. Now experiencing its fifth year of success, the tour has chosen Atalaya Golf & Country Club as the venue for the 2021 Costa del Golf Senior Open. The three-day tournament is taking place on the championship Old Course on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 28th – 30th.

According to tournament organiser Jorgen van Vuure, the first day of the tournament is a “practice day.” The format is a Pairs Better Ball, providing players the opportunity to become familiar with the course before 36 holes of Individual play on days two and three.

The tournament is open to all amateurs and professionals, both men and women, 50 years of age and older. Maximum handicap is 24.

Amateur participants compete to win prizes, and professionals play to win money. Mr. van Vuure commented that Atalaya’s field is composed of approximately 50 players. About 15 participants are Atalaya members. Professionals number around 10, and the remainder of players, all amateurs, are from all over. The field is about 50% smaller than normal. Usually the three-day event attracts about 100 participants, but with the coronavirus situation people are not travelling as usual. This year simply is not normal.

The event offers live scoring on the Senior Tour website.

At Atalaya, a very international field of players is competing. Countries represented include: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Serbia, Spain and Sweden.

Mr. van Vuure stresses that the purpose of the tournament is much more than golf. The social aspect of getting to know one another is also very important. Even in this day with COVID-19 social distancing and mask wearing protocols, the 19th Hole is vital to the tournament’s success.

Earlier this year Senior Tour events were held in Algarve, Portugal and in Mallorca. After Atalaya, the tour goes to Lisbon, Rome, Latvia and Norway to name only a few of 2021’s upcoming  events. Complete 2021 tournament information is available at Senior Golf Tour Europe.
