To enhance safety and provide an extra sense of security to both members and guests, Atalaya has purchased “touch free” ball removal devices for installation on all Old Course flagsticks. The devices will later be added to the New Course as additional stock becomes available.

With the “touch free” mechanism, players will be able to putt out into the hole and retrieve their ball without touching the flagstick.

After holing the ball, simply use the putter head to lift the ball with a “touch free” clip. The ball will eject from the hole and roll a short distance away. When using the device, the lifter never touches the flagstick nor the side of the cup, and the grass around the cup is not damaged, assisting positively in the maintenance of our greens

Atalaya’s new system not only allows players to enjoy their entire round without touching a flagstick but also without ever bending over to retrieve a ball out of the cup. What could be better!

Over the summer the Clubhouse restaurant Ventanas de Atalaya has seen an expansive remodel. Open daily throughout the remodel from 10:00 – 20:00 and offering a complete menu, the project is nearly complete and the restaurant will celebrate its official reopening this month.

Ventanas is touting a completely new look. Gone is the restaurant’s very dated, tired feeling, although touches of its original, traditional character remain. The totally rebuilt and updated new bar is expansive and accented by ceramic flooring and a warm and glowing lighting system. The sound system is now of the highest quality, and sound proofing and mood lighting have been added throughout the dining area and bridge room.

In addition to the new bar, automatic sliding doors have been installed at the restaurant’s entrance. The hope is to keep the cold outdoors where it belongs during the winter months and the cool inside during the hot days of summer.

Along with the environmentally friendly addition of the sliding doors, Ventanas restaurateur Mirko Bogdanov has made a commitment to eliminate single-use plastics in both the restaurant and the Kiosk, which is located under the men’s tee box of Hole One on the Old Course. Bogdanov stated that he is so impressed by his son’s concern about the environment that he feels it essential to do everything possible on his part to add to Atalaya’s ongoing resolve of providing a green environment to all who enjoy the Club’s golf courses and facilities.

A final remodel feature is new, neutral coloured carpeting around the fireplace. This area has through the years provided a warm and inviting setting, especially on winter’s cold days. The new carpet enhances the space with a fresh and welcoming look without losing the cosy and relaxing ambiance that has served as the trademark of Atalaya’s Clubhouse through the years.

With four birdies and one bogey, Azahara ended the day only three shots behind the leader Japan’s Mamiko Higa, who signed her card with a 65.

Thursday’s weather conditions offered many challenges with wind gusts of more than 40 kilometres per hour, but Azahara took the reigns into her own hands and timed many of her second shots and putts just at the right moments. The Malagueña carded a bogey on the very difficult 11th hole, a par three with a history of only “an average of 3.47 hits”. Then, she made a sterling comeback with birdies on holes 12, 14 and 15.

This year marked Azahara’s 11th participation in the Women’s US Open where she has made the cut every year except 2016. Thursday’s round of 68 was the second time she has shot under 70 in a Major.

Unfortunately, Azahara could not match her exceptional Day One round during the next three days of the tournament and finished the championship tied for 55th (T55) at +7. Still, Azahara remains a strong contender with tremendous, unfulfilled promise for the future.

The other four Women’s Major tournaments are: the ANA Inspiration, the Women’s PGA Championship, the Women’s British Open, and the Evian Championship.

Due to the refurbishment the Ventanas de Atalaya restaurant will close for a three-week period and will reopen on Monday, the 17th of June. During the three-week period that the restaurant is closed, the Kiosk will be open as usual, seven days a week, from 08h00 – 19h00.

During the renovation the restaurant’s bar area will be completely rebuilt. All carpet will be removed, and ceramic tiles will be installed.

In the dining area and bridge room, carpet will be replaced with new flooring.

A stylish lighting system will create a warm and glowing atmosphere and add much needed brightness to the facility. Painting and freshening will cast a light, airy touch.

Automatic sliding doors will be installed at the entrance, offering an up-to-date, contemporary look. These doors will also help to keep the cold outdoors where it belongs during the winter months.

The hope is for Atalaya’s clubhouse to gain a completely new image – an upbeat and welcoming, modern atmosphere without losing the cosy and relaxing ambiance that has always made an after-golf or special occasion visit to this charming retreat so memorable.

With the impending need to install many lineal metres of land drainage pipes this summer on both courses, management has recently purchased a state-of-the-art Shelton Chain Trencher.

This new piece of equipment creates minimum surface damage and is perfect to use to install underground services and drainage pipes on golf courses. This minimum surface damage is important, as trenches must be dug up to 200 millimetres in width and one metre in depth.

The new Chain Trencher has a PTO (power take-off) and fits perfectly on to the three-point linkage attached to the back of the Club’s tractor. The new piece of equipment allows for trench width adjustments from 120 millimetres (4.5 inches) to 200 millimetres (8 inches). Trench depth is adjustable up to one metre in depth via the “in cab electro-hydraulic controls”. These controls also turn the conveyor “on” and “off” and regulate the raising and lowering of the hydraulic crumber lift. The Chain Trencher’s digging boom can be moved independently from the crumber leg via the in-cab controls, allowing for clean and easy entry into the ground’s surface.

The Chain Trencher has a 3.0 metre-long conveyor belt that is hydraulically driven. Soil is discharged from the conveyor up to 2.0 metres in height, and the excavated soil is, then, dispersed in trails that run alongside the trench. The results are a clean surface and little damage to the turf.

You may have already seen the new Chain Trencher at work while playing your last round. If not, you will see it very soon and quickly appreciate the great job it does to help our staff as they diligently work each day to improve our courses.

The 1,043 kilo (2,300 pound) big, red hoover, with its large capacity hopper, is already proving its worth, making even the most difficult of clean-up jobs quite simple. According to Atalaya’s Director General Andrés Sánchez, the new vac should be especially helpful “after a day or days with heavy wind”.

More technically speaking both the deck and the trailer function hydraulically and are operated from seat controls. The Toro product information guide recommends using, “…. the proven rubber finger deck for effective sweeping, then switch to the combination deck and start verticutting for overseeding, core pulverization, or de-thatching.”

Tina is now in France and ready to play her first tournament as a professional. “I am excited; this is what I have been training for…,” she said.

Tina welcomes the many challenges that come with being a professional golfer and feels that the time she spent at Atalaya during February and March has prepared her most effectively for the 2019 season. “I am more ready than ever,” she said.

Tina trained for many hours every day, seven days a week while at Atalaya and enjoyed the many opportunities that came her way to meet both Atalaya’s members and staff. Ladies’ Captain Kajsa Schmidt organised a round for Tina with several of Atalaya’s skilled lady golfers. “It was real fun,” said Tina.

About her time at Atalaya, Tina commented, “To me it’s nearly indescribable how you all have welcomed me and made me part of your wonderful club. … Atalaya Golf Club must be among the best clubs to be a member of with its two courses and a fantastic club environment.”

Summing up the five weeks she spent at Atalaya Tina said, “It couldn’t have been better!”

The eighteen-year-old, who was Norway’s top ranked lady amateur, recently turned pro. She has practised on numerous Costa del Sol courses during the last several years and became acquainted with Atalaya whilst playing a tournament here just a little over a year ago. “The courses, people and the environment,” said Tina, “ gave me an incredibly positive experience!”

In keeping with Atalaya Golf & Country Club’s policy of assisting talented, aspiring, young golfers, Atalaya’s Director General Andrés Sanchez is providing a five-week sponsorship to Tina that includes unlimited access to the Club’s practice facilities and golf courses.

According to Tina, when she learned that she was going to be able to return to the Costa to prepare for this year’s professional season, it was her “big wish” to train at Atalaya. Her dream was to make Atalaya her pre-season practice home. Tina said of Atalaya that it “… is exactly the kind of course a professional player needs for pre-season activities. A lot of bunkers, good fairways and very good greens.”

Perhaps you have already caught a glimpse of Tina practising or playing on one of our courses. She is often out early in the mornings for a quick nine holes with her caddie, who just happens to be her dad, Per, a seasoned golfer in his own right.

Although she has only been at Atalaya for a week, Tina is already becoming acquainted with many people. She is spending time with the promising, lady amateur, Italian Valentina Albertazzi, who is also sponsored by Atalaya. As Tina has only played in the past with Valentina during tournaments, she is now enjoying the opportunity to get to know Valentina better whilst they both practice at Atalaya.

In addition to Valentina, Tina is enjoying her interaction with Diego Morito, co-founder of the Enjoy Golf Academy. Diego “…is responsible for the training area and is a very nice and skilled pro, who can help everyone,” said Tina. Also, Tina is meeting many of Atalaya’s members and finding Ladies’ Captain Kajsa Schmidt especially friendly. Tina also commented that the people in the pro shop and the maintenance crew are always “helpful and pleasant”.

Recapping her first week, Tina remarks that things have been hectic. She has been training seven to eight hours each day. “The day starts when the sun rises,” she said. In these early morning hours she plays either nine or 18 holes. Next, she stops for breakfast, after which she takes a brief rest. Short game practice and putting follow. Then, it is time for an early dinner and one more little rest before a second short game practice session, another nine holes or perhaps a physical workout session. “There are many parts of the game to be worked on, and it takes many hours of practice. But five weeks here will hopefully get me ready in time for the season,” said Tina.

All of us welcome Tina to our Atalaya with open arms. We wish her the very best and are delighted that she has chosen Atalaya for her pre-season training program. Tina sums up her feelings about the time she is spending at Atalaya very well: “I am very happy to be here for the next five weeks. It will give me the best preparation for the season.”

During this stopover Pellegrini enjoyed a round with friends on Atalaya’s challenging Old Course, slipping away from his team that is spending a few days training in Marbella.

Pellegrini is a Chilean by birth. The former footballer is currently the manager of England’s Premier League Club West Ham United. During his coaching career Pellegrini has managed teams in Argentina, Chile, China, England, Ecuador and Spain.

What a privilege it is for Atalaya to once again welcome Pellegrini to our Club. We hope that he and his friends enjoyed a wonderful round and time with us!
