Atalaya starts the works on the 1st hole of the Old Course

Short update of our summer Works at Atalaya Golf. The provisional tee is grown in well enough to open for play.

We reviewed the plans and went through the proposed construction program.

Some adjustments to the project were discussed on site, mostly reduction in pipe required for irrigation and drainage. DK will update the drawings accordingly.

Machines and materials will enter the construction site via the maintenance compound.

The area on and around the current 10th provisional green will be used to stockpile materials and store equipment

Construction started last Tuesday, 28th June with site preparation, removal of irrigation heads, fountain, benches, etc.

A provisional path for the players will be cut in and capped with fine gravel to lead them to the provisional tee along the left side of the hole.

An excavator will remove grass from the professional tee and extend the platform with soil taken from the putting green extension. Root zone sand, from the provisional green will be used to construct the tee and putting green. Both the professional tee and putting green will be sodded and the area completed so that we will be able to used the turf and root zone from the provisional green before it is destroyed.

At the same time, the fairway will be stripped of grass so that we will be able to commence earthmoving.

The provisional kiosk is in place and will be opened as soon as we install all the equipment and connections to it.

These works are part of a Masterplan investment of over € 2,500,000 from 2016 to 2017, with 1st hole completely renovated, new kiosk, purchase of 3,500 m2 and building a parking for 150 vehicles.

Always during the works of the hole 1, you be able to play the 18-hole Old Course without affecting the game.

Westwood Golf Club at Atalaya Golf

The day was splendid with temperatures around 25º and a well manicured golf course.

New Marshall at Atalaya Golf

His name is Andrés (as so many in our golf course) Moncayo, he is handicap 4 and a very keen golf player. He has an extended CV with as background experience from green keeper to manager assistant in several courses on the Costa del Sol.

We are sure that he will add this experience to improve our team of marshalls and caddy-masters.

From here, we would like to welcome him!

Gary Harvey and Jeff Hall joined Danny Williams for a round

Gary turned professional in 1975 and joined the European tour in 76, the same time as Jeff (centre) Jeff won the Jersey open, his first European tour event in 1983 and Gary won the Kenyan open two years later 1985.

Jeff competed on the European tour for fourteen years before taking a coaching job in Italy, now living in Marbella Jeff combines coaching with competing on the European senior tour and running his real estate business.

Gary’s dreams of winning the Open may have faded but he is more involved than most of us could ever dream of, he has followed in his fathers footsteps getting his hands on the claret jug more times than any other person.

Gary has now been engraving the claret jug for the last fourteen years and will be at St Andrews this July mixing with the best players in the world.

Sandra Carlborg, the world champion at Atalaya Golf

Sandra Carlborg is the 3 times world champion for the longest drive! The competition takes place in Mesquite, an hours drive from Las Vegas and this year she drove the ball 333 yards! Not only that, in Sweden this year she created a New World Record, driving the ball an amazing 357 metres (391 yards)!!

At 31 years of age, she still plays on the European Tour and the odd competition in America.

To start the year with your best shot, on 10 January 2015 a particularly interesting open tournament will be held at ATALAYA OLD COURSE, played under an individual stableford format in two categories: 1st Category: Handicaps 0 – 14,4; 2nd Category: Handicaps 14,5 – 28.

Atalaya Golf keeps on improving its premises

In this case, it is the 10th tee of the Old Course. This tee has been completely renovated; it has been expanded by 50% to keep it in top condition during the high season, which begins in early October and lasts until late November, and again from the 1st of February until late April.

The white tees, for professional players, have been extended to 52 meters. Which makes Atalaya Golf a much more competitive field.

Thanks to these improvements, the distance of the professional tees is over 6319 meters for this summer, which is necessary to host national and international tournaments.

Additionally, the 14th tee of the Old Course, is completely finished, and will again be open to the public in the coming days.

Meanwhile, work continues on the 9th tee in the same course; we hope to open it again next month.

Atalaya Golf improves its facilities

This year an amount close to € 600,000 will be invested divided into:

– Underground cables and medium voltage towers No. 16 and 15 of the New Course.

– New ladies locker in the clubhouse.

– Several outlets tees totally renovated: wider to withstand conditions in buenisimas occupancy peak seasons.

– Increase the distance from the Old Course tees of professionals with over 165 meters.

– 3,000 tons of sand on the Old Course to improve surface drainage.

– Electrical installation, public address, painting walls in the restaurant.

– Wall covering the area of kiosk and caddy-master with natural stone.

– Improved caminitos golf on the Old Course and New Course.

– Reconstruction of way down the caddy-master to the kiosk (widening and installation of non-slip floor).

– Concrete stairway in various tees.

– Program for removal and disposal of weeds in both golf courses.

– Improvement of the irrigation system and installation of instruments for energy savings.

The course shows very good condition, which will improve during the coming weeks.
