A Golf Club that Cares for its Environment

In a world where sustainability is increasingly important, Atalaya Golf & Country Club steps up and proves that it’s possible to enjoy golf while respecting nature. Located between Estepona and Marbella, this club stands out not only for the quality of its courses but also for its strong environmental commitment.

From water management to biodiversity preservation, Atalaya promotes a style of golf that protects and respects the natural surroundings.

Responsible Irrigation with Reclaimed Water

One of the cornerstones of the club’s sustainability is its efficient irrigation system, which uses recycled water from urban treatment processes. This allows both the Old and New Courses to remain green and healthy without depleting natural water resources — especially crucial in Mediterranean climates.

Additionally, the irrigation system is automated and monitored, avoiding waste and optimizing water use based on weather conditions.

Preserving Local Flora and Fauna

Atalaya Golf is located in a biodiverse natural environment, and the team works actively to protect it:

  • Native trees like pines, olive trees, and cork oaks are preserved and respected.
  • Lakes and landscaped areas serve as refuges for birds and small mammals.
  • The use of chemical products is minimized, with a preference for eco-friendly maintenance solutions.

The golf course thus becomes a place where nature and sport coexist in harmony.

Years of Environmental Commitment

Atalaya contributes to reducing the environmental impact often associated with the golf industry on the Costa del Sol, through many socially responsible actions aimed at protecting and enhancing local biodiversity:

  • Collaboration with environmental consultancy Ofitecma in their research on local wildlife, especially regarding the otter population on the course.
  • Installation of 72 bird nesting boxes, in addition to previously installed bat boxes.

The club has also received various environmental awards and certifications over the years, including:

  • Green Energy Certificate from UniEléctrica (2018)
  • Environmental Quality Certification Seal from the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol and Acosol (2024)

Golf with Purpose

Atalaya Golf believes that the future of golf lies in responsibility, sustainability, and commitment. That’s why every strategic decision at the club considers its environmental impact — proving that sporting excellence can go hand in hand with respect for nature.

The club’s environmental policy includes:

  • Complying with current legislation and other environmental requirements.
  • Improving staff awareness and commitment to proper environmental practices through structured communication and training in a safe working environment.
  • Preventing pollution, minimizing resource use and emissions, managing wastewater and facility discharges responsibly, and striving to reuse, recover, or recycle materials whenever possible.
  • Developing programs to maintain, report, and monitor performance, enabling audits and ongoing improvement toward environmental goals.
  • Communicating with the local community and stakeholders about environmental performance.
  • Identifying opportunities to prevent pollution, reduce waste, save energy, and conserve natural resources.
  • Reviewing this policy annually and striving for continuous improvement in its implementation.

Atalaya Golf is setting an example that sustainability and golf excellence can go hand in hand.
